How the Internet Talked About Women’s Bodies This Week

Digging into the deluge made me want to #BreaktheInternet permanently.

1. Calvin Klein model Myla Dalbesio was described as plus-size (over and over again) after being featured in a new Calvin Klein campaign in which the company didn’t actually make a peep about her size. Instead of celebrating the move as a positive step toward body inclusiveness in the fashion world, it started getting referred to as a “controversy,” which turned into an opportunity to introduce and/or reiterate the difference between the three tiers of size in modeling—straight-size, ‘tweeners and plus size.

2. Reactions proved that size is a marketing tool, so Vogue online was free to flaunt that they are very on trend with this lingerie shoot  featuring all plus-sized models (though they actually might be ‘tweeners….does it matter?).

3. Kiera Knightley’s fed up, too, and used her Interview magazine cover shoot to make a statement about all of the times her body as been “manipulated” by photographers and on film posters. The Internet responded, unpredictably, with an emphasis on the “topless” part of her photo-retouching protest. The star’s “sexy” photo shoot was presented as #NSFW click bait. Knightley’s intentions were completely wallpapered over by the Internet, in which we collectively clicked our way to a place where any agency the actress had in using her body to make a statement was erased.

4. Paper magazine unveiled their Winter 2014 covers featuring Kim Kardashian’s butt. They tried to get people going with #BreakTheInternet, but you’re reading this, so clearly it’s still here. The response was not respectful. Kel Kulus compared Kim Kardashian’s derriere to that of a mythical horse-creature. And Blast Magazine imposed her ass onto the mouth of Bart Simpson, suggesting it looks like a cartoon character’s lips

5. In other Kardashian news, Kylie Jenner got a lip job. Or is she just really good at makeup? We really need to know. In the meantime, copy her look here. No injections needed! Kendall Jenner got a haircut and this was also really big news.

6. Shockingly, Kendall wasn’t the only female star who got a haircut this week. Taylor Swift is downright “unrecognizable” now that she’s bronzed and brunette. As if her new look wasn’t enough, everyone was already having some trouble recognizing Taylor now that she is CRAZY and in 20 different outfits.
