Then & Now: Mother-Daughter Style

Amalia on Lynn: “My mom has always had an effortlessly confident sense of self. When these photos were taken, she had a very simple style that I hardly recognize. Many years later, she would experiment in ways that taught me what I know about fashion. After years of spinal surgeries, she started to make flowy, comfortable dresses out of glittery scarves from the Somali market, embellishing them even further with lapis and turquoise jewelry. My mom reminds me of the style and personality of Little Edie in Grey Gardens. Their ‘costumes of the day’ bucked tradition and made them both feel beautiful.”

Lynn on Amalia: “My mom and I no longer have a relationship, but she was always the first person to tell me how beautiful I was in whatever wacky outfit I put together (aka hot pink afro, sailor moon T-shirt and raver pants in middle school). Confidence in myself is one of the best things I have inherited from her. I believe in aggressively dressing myself for the body that I have, and not the body that someone else thinks I should have. Crop tops, patterns, bikinis and short skirts are meant for any woman at any size, and while it’s not always easy, I try to live by the same unwavering belief in myself that my mom always has.”
